“Jane” is a tribute to the unseen spirits and vibrant life within the Olbrich Gardens, named after the artists grandmother, whose beautiful garden she meticulously cares for at her home in Madison. The double entendre of the name “Jane” also honors those lost to time, remembering every 'Jane Doe' whose spirit has been forgotten and stories remain untold. The installation consists of an array of 8,000 tiny lights and wind chimes hanging within a steel atrium and hovering above the sunken gardens. The billowing of wind and motion of the lights can be seen twinkling among the water lilies, creating a moment of reflection. The minimal design of the atrium takes inspiration from procedural networks. The garden ecosystem is complex yet logical, this interplay between randomness and logic reflects the complexities of nature, resulting in a light sculpture that embodies the beauty of the garden and systems found in nature. The array of lights are programmed to create 3 dimensional holograms of systems and flowers scanned from the Olbrich Gardens, reflecting a plethora of botanical forms and colors visible from all angles. This installation attempts to bridge art and technology to showcase the gardens vast ecological archives and offer a moment for reflection on our relationship with nature.

Pro Tip

Take your time, view the installation from many different angles. Some of the abstract imagery comes into focus when you stand at a distance. Enjoy the reflection in the water.
