"Expression of the Nocturnal" is an illumination of Wisconsin native nocturnal creatures in their element. Many animals are active at dusk and night because the dark is their camouflage, but by making them glow we can see their activity around us. The giant ash tree contains 100 bats in various states of rest and flight, and families of raccoons, possums, skunks, badgers, and owls are spread throughout the gardens.
Inside the Installation
Materials: 3D Printed PETG Plastic, LED fairy lights, and cable
- Models are printed hollow at roughly life size.
- LED fairy lights are stuffed inside to illuminate them.
- Bats are connected on 4 strings of 200ft cables wound through the tree.
- The creatures took 511 hours to 3D print.
Artist Bio
Bob Baddeley
Bob Baddeley is a Madison-based computer engineer with experience in developing products from concept through mass production. He's been a member of the local makerspace Sector67 since 2011 and has a wide variety of experience designing and building with electronics, lighting, plastics, wood, and fabric.
