Meet a giant sparkling illuminated cuttlefish brought to life! Standing 8 feet tall and stretching 15 feet long, this captivating creature is crafted from metal, fiberglass, glass, and resin. Its steel skeleton provides a sturdy frame, while mosaic glass panels form a skin that dazzles as light filters through, scattering vibrant colors across its surface. Metallic accents add elegance and protection, while kaleidoscopes, held by tentacles, invite viewers to explore shifting, colorful views.

Inside the Installation

  1. Cosmic Cuddle is a morph creature, based on the Hawaiian bobtail squid, blended with a cuttlefish.
     

  2. It's lovingly nicknamed "Billy the Squid" a name given by Miki's dad.
     

  3. The glasswork tells the story of Miki's family, life, and culture.
     

  4. Every piece of metal was hand-cut and hand-formed with no CNC or machine work used.
     

  5. The glass mosaic brings light through the steel structure, glowing from inside.

Artist Bios

Miki Masuhara-Page

Miki Masuahara-Page is a native Hawaiian artist currently creating magic in Portland, OR. Raised in the lush beauty of the islands, Miki's imagination has always been wild, colorful, and just a little mischievous. With a background in sculpture and a love for experimenting, she brings mythical creatures and playful beings to life, often with a twist that invites people to interact, explore, and even play. Her work is a blend of fantasy, nature, dreams, and unexpected materials, whether it's turning scrap metal into a joyful beast or crafting a creature that seems like it leapt out of another dimension. Miki loves figuring out weird and wonderful ways to make her art come alive. Her goal? To spark delight, inspire wonder, and remind people that imagination is a powerful, joyful force.

Casey Repp

Casey loves making art, big and small, and creating things people will enjoy and interact with, especially combining traditional styles with technology to evoke emotion. He helped create art pieces on display at festivals as well as permanent installations. Casey grew up on the Oregon coast and currently resides near Portland, OR.

Matthew Book Scheick

Matthew is a metal sculptor based out of Portland, OR with a background in large public art. For more than 20 years, he built over 40 large scale sculptures for universities, hospitals, music festivals, government buildings, private residences, and corporate offices.  Most of this work was in collaboration with other artists. Matthew was also the lead prop builder and designer for the Portland Grand Floral Parade for 10 years. Making art is his passion and purpose in life. Outside of metal sculpture he also works in glass, wood, acrylic, clay, and foam. Matthew draws and paints in his spare time and has recently begun writing fiction works.
