One of the touch sensors emits a very small amount of electricity - so small that you can’t even feel it. The other sensor measures how much electricity comes back. When you touch both sensors and hold hands, your body completes an electrical circuit, which acts like a light switch to activate the sculpture.
- The music and sound effects coming from Allium are tied directly to the interactivity and lighting animations. The custom software uses real-time audio synthesis and generative algorithms to create the dynamic soundscape that responds to interactivity and syncs with the light animations.
- The underlying structure of Allium is a type of geodesic dome whose geometric form is known as a “truncated icosahedron.” A truncated icosahedron is a 32-sided shape made up of 12 regular pentagons and 20 regular hexagons. Using this shape allows us to approximate a sphere using flat panels - much like a soccer ball.
- Beneath the surface, 480 digitally controlled RGBW LED modules are mounted, to which the flower stalks are affixed. The stalks are made of acrylic rods that act as light-pipes, transmitting light from the base through the stalk to the blossom at the end of each stalk. All the blossoms and stalk bases were custom designed and 3D-printed.
- Often given to those beginning something new, alliums symbolize luck, prosperity, and perseverance. Composed of multiple blossoms in a single cluster, they also symbolize unity. We want to believe in a future that is prosperous through community and togetherness. We believe this is only possible through patience, perseverance, and openness to new perspectives. By engaging visitors to gather and join hands around Allium, we invite participants to imagine how we might prosper in the future through collective action.

Everything Good Studio
Everything Good Studio is a collaboration between Rachel Ciavarella and Jack Kalish, a multidisciplinary art and design team based in Brooklyn, NY. They work with generative systems and software to create immersive, interactive installations that empower viewers to become active contributors to the work. Through immersion, play, and accessibility, their work invites the audience to momentarily suspend certainty and engage with wonder and curiosity.
